MAMMOGRAPHY SAVES LIVES

Schedule Your Mammogram Today

Routine mammographic screening is the best way to detect breast cancer early, when treatment outcomes are the most favorable for our patients.

Hackensack Radiology Group utilizes 3D mammography, also known as tomosynthesis, which is the current state-of-the-art technology in breast imaging and diagnosis.

Regular breast cancer screening leads to earlier diagnosis and better outcomes. A few reasons to choose HRG for your breast care:

  • We offer same-day reads for your screening mammogram, so you will leave knowing your results.
  • All of our breast diagnostics and procedures are performed by fellowship-trained experts in breast radiology.
  • All of our diagnostic breast imaging is now done using state-of-the-art 3D mammography (or tomosynthesis), with no additional charge to our patients.

How Does 3D Mammography (Tomosynthesis) Work?

3D mammography is performed similarly to traditional mammography: the imaging technologist will position your breast tissue between compression paddles and typically obtain two sets of images on each side.

Unlike a traditional 2D machine that captures a single image for each position, 3D mammography obtains a series of thin tissue slice images through each breast in just a few seconds, allowing specialists to review your tissues slice-by-slice.

Do I Need a Mammogram?

The American College of Radiology, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and the Society of Breast Imaging recommend screening mammography beginning at the age of 40, for women with average breast cancer risk.

Earlier screening and additional testing may be appropriate for women with higher-risk, including:

  • A strong family history of breast cancer (e.g. first-degree relative)
  • BRCA genetic mutation
  • A prior breast biopsy showing “atypical hyperplasia”
  • Radiation therapy to the chest region before the age of 30

The Advantages of 3D-Mammography (Tomosynthesis)

At New Century Imaging, we have upgraded all of our imaging systems to 3D mammography. Some of the benefits of 3D mammography include:

  • Increased accuracy that results in fewer false positives, meaning less “call-backs” and less extra pictures
  • Greater sensitivity in screening patients with “dense breasts”
  • Recommended for younger women (40-50 years old) due to the higher incidence of “dense breasts” in this age group
  • Recommended for high-risk patients due to increased accuracy

FAQ and the Experience: Everything You Need To Know

How often do I need to undergo mammography?

Annual screening mammography still remains the standard of care for women over 40.

What is breast density, and what does it have to do with breast cancer?

Breast density is a description of the appearance of breast tissue as it appears on a mammogram. Dense breast tissue represents the fibrous and glandular tissue within the breasts and shows up as “white” areas on a mammogram. Younger women tend to have more dense breasts than older women.

Women with dense breasts have an increased probability of developing breast cancer. Additionally, it can be more difficult to detect breast cancer in the mammograms of women with dense breasts. This is where 3D mammography (tomosynthesis) is of even more value!

Does Hackensack Radiology Group charge extra for 3D-mammography (tomosynthesis)?

No, unlike some facilities, there are no additional charges for this state-of-the-art technology.
