1. Will I be expected to pay for my exam at the time of service?
HRG will submit a claim to your insurance carrier on your behalf; therefore, payment is not due at the time of service. You will be billed for any co-insurance or deductible as indicated by your insurance carrier. Co-pays are collected at the time of service. Patients should contact their insurance carriers for specific details about their co-insurance or deductibles as this information varies per plan and per patient.

2. How would I know if my insurance requires pre-certification or a referral?
More and more carriers are requiring that prior authorization be obtained for imaging studies. If you have already scheduled an appointment with us, our pre-certification team will research your insurance plan’s requirements for prior authorization. If you do not have an appointment yet, contact our pre-certification team at 201.288.9191, select option “2” or email us at precert@hrgimaging.com or precert@ncimaging.com. Otherwise, we recommend that you contact your insurance carrier directly to obtain this information prior to your appointment.

3. Will Hackensack Radiology Group (HRG) “accept assignment”?
Many patients can be easily misled by the term “accept assignment”. It might seem as though the provider (HRG) would be accepting the insurance carrier’s payment as payment in full and not balance bill the patient. This is not what it means to accept assignment. By signing as a participating provider, HRG accepts a fee schedule for procedures performed. By being a participating provider, the charges submitted by HRG are usually paid at a negotiated, reduced rate. To accept assignment is to accept the reduced rate and not charge the patient for the difference between the original charge and the reduced rate. Patients are however, always responsible for co-insurance, deductibles, co-pays or any amount otherwise not covered by their carrier, if the carrier says the patient is responsible. To not bill a patient for the balance determined by their insurance carrier, would be unlawful.

4. How much does my exam cost and how much will I be responsible for?
Our fees vary by type of exam and by whether or not contrast is used. If you would like to know the fee for a specific exam, you may contact our billing company for this information at 800.650.1304. Your responsibility toward the charges varies based on your insurance plan. You will be responsible for any co-insurance, deductible or co-pay as indicated by your insurance carrier. The exact amount you may owe may vary based on our contract with your carrier. See insurance lists above to determine if we participate with your plan.

5. I received a notice from my insurance carrier referencing my charges at HRG. Is this a bill?
What you probably received is an EOB (explanation of benefits). Review that document carefully as it usually states what, if any, responsibility you have toward our charges. This is not a bill. If you would like assistance in interpreting this document, please call our billing department at 800.650.1304.

6. I do not see my insurance plan listed as a plan with which HRG participates. What are my options?
Even if you do not see your plan listed as one that is accepted by HRG, you most likely can have your exam at our office. If your insurance plan allows you to go out of network, you may schedule your appointment at any of our locations. You must be aware that when using your out of network benefits, you may be subject to a deductible or a higher co-insurance than if you were to utilize your in-network benefits. As we are frequently updating our list of accepted insurance carriers, you should check back with us often for newly added plans.
